Sutherland High School's principal and senior management are more worried about the reputation of the school than the students mental and emotional well-being. It is a dictatorship instead of a safe space for learners.
I am a current pupil at sutherland, the school is terrible. The racism is outrageous. please as a parent, do not send your kids to a place like sutherland if you want them to be happy.
Constant noise pollution
Sirens, bells and overly load tannoy system that disturb neighborhoods up to 4km away - for hours and hours in the middle of the night, school holidays and during COVID 19.
No respect for residents, pensioners or the use of a public road - they do what they want, regardless of the effects on the thousands of people who live around the school.
No apologies for their actions.
This school is teaching the patriarchal concepts of privilege, elevated social standing and a caste system to its students through these actions, and they are unmannered, entitled and lacking in awareness as a result. I will not recommend this school to anyone.
I am a current pupil and think that some parts of what has been said is true. The children who give a bad impression the first day sticks with them up to a few grades later. Teachers talk and some all agree to juat not like you. The school does have great facilities, pool, rugby and hockey fields, tennis courts and a squash court. The teachers can be a bit racial but they teach the proper syllabus and those who understand it are rewarded with academic trophies. This is a great school all depending on your perspective♡
Sutherland High School is not a good school before you go to the school you think wow this school is amazing look at the sports and excellent academics but when you actually apply and get accepted it's totally different the teachers are just there to teach and get paid they don't care about the students just there money.I will admit the sports is really good the coaches are well experienced but that doesn't take away the fact that if you don't do sports you are totally neglected they don't care you are basically last priority, if you are not favoured by a teacher, you don't regularly do sport or get average marks they don't care about you it's like you not there. Grade 8 at Sutherland is the worst experience you will ever have.On the camp they boss you around as if you are there pet, if you ever thinking about sending your child to Sutherland and you know they are not the best at sports and average at academics forget Sutherland highschool. The is also a lot of racism towards black and Indian children with the teachers and principals white kids are first priority I totally do not recommend Sutherland highschool!!!!!
Hated the school from the first day of Grade 8 all the way to matric.
They favouritism, racism and downright lack of respect and acknowledgement of other learners was demoralising and depressing.
Learners who were not into sport were completely neglected and not given the time of day.
Kids who were into the arts were not catered for.
If you were not a teacher's favourite, then forget about improving in understanding her subjects.
I wouldn't say its the worst school. But I would rather lose my eye sight than relive those five years.
Sutherland both has its ups and downs but personally I do not pride myself as a ex Sutherland high pupil. If you are not in an A team for any of their MAIN sports, a CONSTANT academic achiever, a significant star in their culture programs, and/or a dedicated student to their various camps, the school does not care about you. But if you are, the school will go above and beyond for you no matter the circumstances. Sutherland high cannot ever pride themselves on their disciplinary systems put in place. Being at that school felt like a dictatorship, run by old, close minded, homophobic tyrants that did not care for the mental well being of its students but more of the image of the school perceived by outsiders. I love learning and growing as a person but that school did nothing but take all joy out of life, drain me, and break me.
I spent the worst 5 years of my life here, and I bet it would’ve been better if I was a white kid. This school is fascist, misogynistic, homophobic and above all RACIST. This school cares about their image above all, covers up their white students faults, but the smallest incident of a student of colour, it’s taken to the furthest extent. I wish I went to a different high school. They take away your confidence and stunt your personal development. The principal himself is racist and homophobic. His only concern is his image within the school. He is disrespectful and acts like he is above the law. He is literally the Donald trump of the school. The school’s discipline department is even worse. Manipulating other students into admitting false truths, speaking to students illegally without parental consent, forcing students to sign documents. Interrogating students as if they’re criminals. The most disgusting school I’ve ever come across. Their code of conduct is paved perfectly for white children, and when rules are broken by white students, it’s taken ever so lightly. Entering the school is signing away your life for 5 years
The purpose of sutherland high and the message they put out to prospective parents and students is a great however the grass is not greener on the other side, fueled with lots microagressions, the favouring of white students and homophobia. You feel a need to fill a box to please people who look down on you because for example you wear an afro they perceive to be dirty. You get ostracised for being a female and wearing a skirt, told to not wear skirts that catch the attention of male staff when male staff should be taught how not to eye young females of the school. It's a school that protects its staff and white students so if you want to go there as a poc/lgbtq+/female to grow and develop don't bother.
I hated it there. They didn’t care for anyone other than the white kids, they school left no space for diversity. The principal was the worst. Don't send your kids there if they care about their mental health
Sutherland high school is a school I will never send my child to. This school makes you lose hope in yourself. The blatant racism, covering up the white students faults, the homophobia, the school rules all in favour of white people. Does not respect other religions. Cares more about their public reputation than their students.
This school only aims to protect the feelings of white people. They don’t care about the black children. They only pretend to do. Their code of conduct doesn’t even work in favor of black girls AT ALL. White girls come with different colored hair but when black girls do it, all hell breaks loose.
the school focuses so much on trying to be the best school in Gauteng so much that they forget to actually care about the students. They worry more about the image of what other people and schools say about Sutherland and forget to actually worry about the students well being. All big situations that have happened such as gender based violence, they will sweep the situation under the carpet, but if a student wears a Hoodia in class, the school will freak out because it destroys the school appearance. All they want it money money money.
I'm embarrassed to be a Sutherland pupil.
Sutherland, school of pride.
Sutherland High school is the best school that I've ever attended in my history of schools. In Sutherland nobody is left out, we are all a family. It's the best school where one could build character and become the best that they could be. Sutherland is the school for great opportunities and also resembles hard work. It has amazing teachers who do their utmost best to make sure that you are happy with your marks and being a pupil at the school. It has amazing facilities, I honestly would say I don't feel embarrassed talking about my school and speaking with people from other schools because I'm proud of my school. I could go on about all the things it has done for me but the most important thing is that I am who I am today because of Sutherland high school. It's the one family that has always stuck by me and been there. I appreciate this school more than anything. I would recommend this school to anyone from anywhere because I AM A PROUD SUTHERLAND PUPIL.
Sutherland is one school that I can give a heads up to and recommend to anyone to apply to. It is a school of development and great opportunities. It's one school that is there for you every step of the way during your development and helps you to become the best you can ever be. The academics are amazing, the teachers do their utmost best to make sure that you are happy with your marks. The facilities are so amazing and neat. I can proudly say I'm proud to be a Sutherland student, this school pushes me to be the best I can be and I would love to thank them for everything. I wouldn't be who I am without them.
