Capitalist, military prison. Haven for mean teachers
This school is the worst. The uniform regulations are absolute butthole. Like you get detention if your hair is above a certain height and if you don’t have a gradual fade, or if you don’t have something you’re supposed to have on like your name tag for example or even for the smallest thing wrong about your uniform like a boy not having a belt for example and the detention is on Fridays and you do a test that if you get less than 80%, you have repeat detention the next Friday. You also get detention for being late, the teachers are just mean, most of them are. There’s this one teacher whom I absolutely hate, he’s a bully and doesn’t consider our feelings as students, it’s not like we deserve respect anyways since we’re just a bunch of worthless teenagers. The rules have relaxed slightly ever since the previous principal left but one thing that hasn’t changed is the phone policy. We can’t bring our phones to school, and if we want to, we have to rent a cellphone locker. So this school is not only (probably) racist, unnecessarily strict and has teachers who crawled out from the deepest depths of hell, they’re also capitalist and don’t care about what happens to us after school, it ain’t their problem anymore, if you’re stuck at school without a phone, then damn, sucks for you. Girls’ hair has to be tied up as well, and as another reviewer said, very unnecessary, unless the hair reaches the butt, then it shouldn’t be a problem and there’ve also been some racist happenings which I won’t mention here and some homophobic ones too. So if you hate your child or if they’re misbehaving or something, this school is for you, but if you love them, consider schools like Greenside or Northcliff. The administration here just doesn’t understand teenage psychology and forgot they were once teenagers as well.
P.S. the tuck shop is overpriced as heck
There’s a few things I didn’t mention but the review is too long and there’s a lot I have to say so this is all you need to know I guess.
Good day
I was called in to sign an acceptance letter for my daughter grade8 2025. On arrival to the school I was told a R4000 need to be paid like today if that not paid then I can't sign the letter why was this not told to me on the phone. So I have 2 daughters who I want to put in the school and the amount now becomes R8000. Who has that type of money in the middle of the month. And why is it I'm not even told I can pay it off. I'm a single father only trying to give the best to my 2 girls. The school was no help at all. I then also asked if I could apply for a subsidy they said forms only get issued February 2025. Why call me in and get my hopes up and then when getting there it's just money.
Administration is the worst, I applied for admission in August 2022 and was told that I should get feedback by Dec which obviously did not happen. Each time I call to follow up on my application around Dec I was told to call the following week which I did and each week would be call the following week uo until the schools closed. Today is the 6th of January 2023 and schools are opening in 4 days time for the new academic year: I still do not have a response on whether my child was accepted or not. Do they not think about the parents and kids and that we can not be informed 2 days before schools open of the outcome? So disappointed
Uniform is more important than knowledge apparently
This school is just bad. Teachers are racist and rude for no reason. They care more about the uniform than they care about the education. We sit on the quad for not wearing our flag badge? So you are telling me a badge is more important then me gaining any knowledge? As a student I definitely recommend some other school. The amount of unnecessary actions this school takes is just ridiculous. We have to take the same bags and this then comes to us losing our bags because of mix ups. Although this school has decent facilities , i would not in a million years recommend this school
My daughter is in grade 8 but she is not happy at all. Learners complains are not taken serious. What made me angry was my daughter being punished for a school parch and was on the sun the whole day, didn't attend classes. You can punish all you want but why deny her education? She says the school is too strict and teachers are racist.
Anyone looking to come to Roosevelt. Don't. As a teenager and young adult you need to be able to grow and develop and figure life out while mainting good academics. Roosevelt maintains good academics but at the cost of a loss of self image and is an oppressed environment where students are bullied by the head staff. Students are treated as if they are students in the military.
This school is so boring. And some of the teacher have attitudes for no reason and call kids “problematic” - then have the audacity to blame the kids for talking whilst to to them then goes on their phone.
Roosevelt is great in terms of academic and sports and all that, but regarding the code of conduct and the rules the school has is ridiculous. Girls aren't allowed to wear pants in summer and learners 8-10 have to carry around the same school bag that looks ugly and big with the school logo on it.
in terms of academics and sports the school is great, but when it comes to the code of conduct its just no.Their rules are ridiculous and it doesn't allow us to express ourselves. The girls aren't allowed to wear pants in summer, all the grade 8-10s have to use this ugly bag that looks like a cooler box and it's so big so imagine. The boys aren't allowed to wear ties in summer and yet it looks so neat and the summer uniform looks untidy. The girls aren't allowed to leave their hair loose which I think is also pointless. ALSO the one thing I think everyone agrees is the worst one of all is that we're not allowed to bring our phones to school so what if we having transport issues after school?? and also the teacher aren't allowed to phone our parents either so if we have transport issues we'll be stuck at school until who knows when
The schools not all great, some teachers are racist and get angry at the smallest things. They never have any fun activities and I feel like the learners are over worked.
Roosevelt High School is an amazing school with great academics, sports, and cultural activities. With the school's many praises, there are two things that have caused controversy amongst learners and parents. The first is one minor uniform regulation that restricts the female students from wearing pants in the summer. It is something the girls have wanted for years and in my opinion, it is time to change things as times are changing too. The second "uniform" regulation is a questionable one. It is compulsory for learners from grade 8-10 to have a school bag that is branded with the schools logo and has an unappealing and unethical design. The first design of this bag was more of a copy of the popular 'Kings' bags. The new design however, is very big and bulky. Many of the small grade 8 learners can be spotted walking around the school with these big, heavy bags that they struggle to carry because they have 9 subjects, which means 2 or more books per subject because of textbooks that they may carry if they have not rented a locker, and entra reading books, exam pads etc.
Many people do not support the idea of the bags as they do cause other problems like missing bags, confusion and bag theft because all the bags look the same. This is one of the things that take away from the amazing freedom and culture of the school and the inspirational positive relationships between students and staff.
This school is good in terms of education, but they tend to do unnecessary things that have nothing to do with learning such as making the learners wear the same bag(which I think is unethical because the bags can get mixed up or lost... they are also not good quality bags). The school also has very strict uniform rules that dont allow girls to wear pants in the summer, even when it's really cold. All in all though its not a bad school, it just doesn't give the learners a chance to think for themselves and prove their capabilities.
