Parkvale Primary School - An overview since inception until now
This primary school is situated in Valhalla Park, Bishop Lavis. Established in 1983 Januarie 01.
The school boasted with enrolment of well over 1 000 learners from Sub. A to Std. 5 (now Gr. R to Gr. 7) comprising of a staff of over 40 teachers.
Learner enrolment currently totals at 800 - 900 more or less.
Gangsterism, drug- and alcohol abuse, single or absent parents, like in all socio-economic disadvantage communities do have a negative impact on schooling of local learners. Currently it is a no fee section 21 primary school with ample room to improve on academics and sports. As in many cases the funding of projects are a big concern and the school have to rely on donations and arranging school functions, even to accomodate for travelling, outfitting and catering for one or two athletes that may have rise to upper echelon of schools competitions, eg cross-country, table-tennis etc.
Sports available are soccer, netball, cross-country and efforts are being made to get chess and table-tennis going as well, although table-tennis delivered a couple of learners who made it to SA championships for primary schools a few years ago.
The school also produced a lecturer in music; incidently, the son of the very first principal, who opened the school. Sadly both passed away; the principal about 5 to 10 years before his son, the music lecturer, passed on due to Covid-19 and complications.
Currently about half of the staff has been active/served for 15 or more years with the staff-member that served/taught the longest, at 36 years at the school.
Dedication, pride and the feeling of selfworth will ensure that this school can become the beacon of hope and excellence in the Valhalla Park community.
