Went for the full 5 years. Very academic focused and many extra murals , however most extra murals clash with each other, leaving one to have the option to do them 2-3 times a week and do 2-3 each term. Also major theft problem (!)
Stressful, some days I would have 4 assessments on the same day. Once a grade tried to petition to move some of the assessments; the grade was gathered and told “no”.
Nevertheless the school has great ground staff, wonderful teachers (for the most part) and will definitely do their best to get you to university.
Parktown girls was horrible. The school does not do anything about bullying (speaking from personal experience and friends who have been seriously bullied) even though having a ‘no bullying’ policy. They have some really good teachers but some are really terrible and often do not know what they are teaching about (one teacher even swears excessively and locks you out the classroom when not answering incorrectly). The current headmistress does nothing when she is approached with a problematic situation. Some good news is that the security guards outside the gates are most of the times, super friendly and will make your day!
I have attended Parktown for 5 years.Overall it is a well organized school and very academic driven. However I found one of the best things to be the extra mural society. Each sport,Cultural and service activities all had little sub societies and families that always lend support. If you ever need help I usually found that you just had to ask and a teacher or student would help. One of the best parts were how much the older girls were really mentors and role models who set the standard of how one should behave. The school still has its issues such as popularity and favouritism being a big factor in awards and decision making and there have been instances of bullying. However on the whole I think the school deals with behavioral situations well. The school strives for excellence and focuses on giving all students an above average to high education to result in good marks rather than having a few high achievers. I recommend this school.A word of advice though to anyone joining:get ready to work hard, take pride in what you do and never see a challenge you can't conquer.
I attended Parktown Girls for 2 years. The school puts a lot of emphasis on the speed of academics and it puts you in the right direction for University/ College.
The most common phrase that I heard at school was “Parktown is a society” that was the school’s attitude towards theft, bullying, internal pressure from teachers and balancing school life with sports vs home life.
As girls, we were expected to manage our lives with the best skills, if you fall behind it was too bad.
I was one of the many girls who could not keep up and ended up leaving the school because they did not seem to have compassion for anyone that wasn’t good enough to keep up with the Parktown standard.
I still respect the school but wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who struggles sometimes.
This is a school that cares about the safety of every student even teachers. Every student support one another in many different ways like sharing food for students who don't have lunch, having students who are willing to volunteer to tutor other students, etc. Love the school.
It’s a great school full of diversity. Girls can interact and get to know so many other girls which can change their perspective on multiple things. It’s a well organized school and highly school was great.
