My experience? Well where do I start, the staff at the school are always choosing favorites and those favorites are the ones with money. The racism in this school is at its peak and when they say they treat everyone equally, they don’t. Now onto the code of conduct, we had a civvies day at school recently, I came to school in a oversized t-shirt and skirt, which was perfect length to be appropriate and even if they had a problem with it I could make it longer cause it was stretchy. They all stared at me (the staff) and gave me dirty looks, treating me like I was wearing nothing at all when actually this outfit was almost full coverage and barely any skin was showing. During class they pulled me out of class and asked me to go to the office (myself and another girl) we went to the office and they start shouting at us about how our outfits are distracting everyone and that it’s not appropriate when it actually was, they proceeded to shame us and told us that we should find another school and told us they’ll kick us out. They handed me a pair of used leggings and told us to put it on and gave the other girl a old jersey with stains on. We proceeded to walk to the bathroom to get changed, at this point we are furious at them because they shouldn’t be allowed to degrade us like this. We walk out the bathroom and go to office because they wanted to see, they look at us up and down and say “thank god, now the world won’t be distracted by you both, now go away”. When I tell you I have never felt more insecure and self conscious, they made me feel so terrible it was one of the worst experience of my life and I’ll never forget it
I highly don’t recommend putting yourself through this by going to this school and I hope this gives you insight on what the students go through…
Riddled with racism, teachers that dont teach in class that just sit behind their desks, sexism, boys club. Grade tutors are incompetent and do not care about the students. Bullying and sexual harassment is rife and no one gives a damn. Image image image is all they care about.kids are just a commodity. Unqualified staff, staff on drugs, staff going out drinking with kids from school, staff on school camps get intoxicated and cant even walk. Teachers bullied by executive staff if they stand up for us kids, teachers playing games on phones instead of teaching. This school looks amazing from the outside. But inside its rotten.
In all honesty the school does not take consideration for students who mentally struggle with school as a whole. The school hides serious matters under exploitation of authority and white privelage which affects students I'm very harmful ways. The school needs to improve the control of bullying, racism, homophobia and harassment by communicating with students on these matters. Poc students and people who come fr various religious backgrounds have little to no recognition in the school and are continuously undermined by white people. The education system is very poor due to the unnecessary topics that are being taught repeatedly and have not been updated to recent time. Engagement with students on these topics on current time can help improve work ethic and help with freedom of communication in classrooms. Needless to say I have made amazing friends that have helped me grow as a better person and stand up for what I believe in. Hopefully the school can face their faults and acknowledge what they're doing is wrong and need to change for the better of the future.
The school got me into the 5 University's which allowed me to choose where I wanted to study. I now study Charted accounting with a academic bursary from my university and managed to get into a hostel in the first round of placing. My experience there was better than primary school and I found my teachers to be reliable in my personal and academic life.
I personally haven’t noticed the racism at all— but students with more money are favoured in the school. The teachers choose favourites and don’t assist the students they ‘don’t like’ when asking for help
I’ve been at northcliff high school for the past 3 years and I gotta say it has been the worst experience of my life,Racism ,favouritism etc all they look at is how we look eg our hair & dress code and they have such unnecessary school rules and for the racism it will never stop
Not recommended for anyone.
Absolutely phenomenal school. Transformed me from a timid shy little boy who couldn't make friends into a head boy. NHS has given me amazing opportunities and the blue flame will always burn brightly within my heart.
Looks like a good school from the outside with their achievements but in reality the inside is infested with racism, favouritism and sexism amongst many other issues that are swept under the carpet. The school is portrayed as a successful school in academics, sports and cultural activities however this facade masks what happens beyond the school gates. As I progressed throughout my high school career here, these issues became more and more clear to me.
Northcliff also fails to assess their teacher's capability of attending to the needs of their students as most teachers "parrot teach" by reading the textbooks to the learners.
Bullying also extremely apparent in this high school with little being done by the executives, let alone the teachers. Diversity with regards to race etc in the executive positions are NON existent.
Wish someone made me aware of these issues before I attended this school.
Yes the drama department and choir and extra mural sports are great... But most of the teachers don't care about the students and only care about getting the work done that they need to do to look good for their employers... And if they cannot teach that subject well and most of the children fail a test they blame it on the children for not studying hard or long enough or not paying attention in class when in actual fact the teachers don't allow you to speak your mind or ask more than 2 or 3 questions per class otherwise you're being "to talkative" or "disrupting the class" And for the older grades concerning the younger ones... In the beginning at orientation they are very welcoming and helpful but towards the middle of the school year and end of the school year they treat the younger grades like trash and expect you to follow whatever instructions they have I forced, even if they are unnecessary for example my friends and I were sitting near the field area and a group of grade 12s and the head girl were sitting on the steps and were shouting at grade 8s because they just were sitting in the spot they wanted to and were telling them "you guys are so ungrateful" "do you even know who I am" "I'm the head girl and you will do as I say" and were also swearing at them... Just because of a place to sit
Absolutely riddled with racism, favoritism and sheer utter incompetence. The school takes pride in its executive staff and treats the students like absolute trash
I do not recommend this school at all!!! I had the worst experience, I was bullied by not only pupils but teachers as well for having a condition which at the time I couldn’t control. I went to the school and received so care, they do not care about their students. All the school cares about is beating other schools in sports, especially Randpark High School, that is their main concern. My brothers friends got a scholarship for Northcliff and they turned it down saying they were going to go to another school and the Head or Sports said “Shame I pity you”, they are unprofessional. This is one of many examples. They mock schools for what goes wrong with them, but trust me they have their dirty secrets as well. They are unprofessional and cocky when they shouldn’t be. And don’t even get me started on the favoritism. More obsessed with their image than anything else.
I love how enthusiastic the teachers are and how the extra murals allow u to Express yourself with lots of opportunities. The higher grades are also very kind in helping new students in lower grades feel welcome
