Formal Complaint Against Principal – Humiliation of My Grandson
Dear Chairperson of Meerendal Pre-Primary
I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against Vanessa Graham, the principal of Meerendal pre-primary], regarding the unacceptable treatment of my grandson, Zeeshan Joseph who is a Grade R a learner at your school.
On 27th when my son in law brought Zeeshan to school Vanessa Graham publicly humiliated my grandson in front of his classmates and other parents by stating that he could not attend school due to his parents' inability to pay school fees. This was not only distressing for my grandson, but also a clear violation of his rights.
I wish to remind the school that under Section 5(3) of the South African Schools Act (No. 84 of 1996), no child may be denied access to education due to non-payment of school fees. Furthermore, the Children’s Act of 2005 emphasizes the right of children to dignity and protection from psychological harm. The principal’s actions were not only unlawful but also emotionally damaging.
I request the following actions be taken:
A formal written apology from the principal to my grandson and our family.
Assurance that no child at Meerendal pre-primary will face such humiliation in the future.
Clarity on the school's official policy regarding school fees and financial assistance.
If this matter is not addressed by Friday 31 January 2025z I will escalate my complaint to the Western Cape Education Department and other relevant authorities.
I trust that the School Governing Body will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. Please acknowledge receipt of this complaint and advise me on the next steps.
