As of mid-2024, Vryburger is in a state of collapse. It was even in national news earlier this year. Basically a classic example of socialism in action; many parents simply stopped paying school fees, and there's nothing the school can do - so others stopped paying too. As I write I'm one of the 20% of parents who are paying school fees; yes, 80% are not paying for their children. As a result, many teachers have left and others, who went on strike for not being paid, were dismissed. At present there are now 45+ children to a classroom; to cite my child after attending a Maths Lit class: "The teacher wrote down a formula with fractions, asked the pupils if they understood it - they said yes - then she said good, because she didn't". Also, some classes have a total lack of discipline; our child battles to even hear teachers because pupils are ignoring the teachers, chatting loudly to the point of shouting, and the teachers are powerless to do anything because the government removed discipline from schools. So the teachers go through the motions, good pupils are being failed because there is nothing teachers can do about the trashy kids who have no desire to achieve anything and clearly have not been taught basic discipline or manners by their parents.
This situation is the result of parents esteeming booze, takeaways, etc above their children's education - the government blissfully doing nothing - the school powerless to throw those non-payers out. Needless to say my son's grades this year are atrocious and will have to redo the year (elsewhere!). I don't begrudge the headmaster or the teachers; this is on the parents. But unless there is a dramatic turnaround - basically, a miracle - do not send your children to Vryburger.
Im wriiting this with a very heavy heart , my daughter had been going to this school for almost 3 years , in January when schools opened my daughter went to school but around 9am i received disturbing calls from her i tried to understand what she meant but she just told me i have been told to go back to grade 10 as they say i failed and her anger came from the way these news were broken down to her. I just told her to come home but a few hours later i got a call that my daughter has been bospitalised she tried to commit sucide. It was the worst call ever , i rushed to the hospital only to see my daughter in that state. I called the school principal Mr olivier and explained to him what just happened and i aske why wasnt i informed about my child being demoted at first he sounded sympathetic but as time went on he seemed to careless. I asked if i could appeal cor this he told me i was too late . He said he he will speak to ths board and evaluate her marks that was in february till today i havent heard from them and my daughter is still not going to school. I went to the school to speak to him he promised all this will sorted but nothing has been done. I woùld like to say to all parents pls take note of the things the kids complain about regarding the school. I could have lost my daughter therefore i would never wish this on anyone. The person who broke the news to her said it i front of her friends and in a mokery way.
A lot of people boast about how amazing this school is but it isn't. It's way to corrupted and most of the teachers aren't even qualified for the subject they teach. The school is so disorganized we never know when our real break is or what time school comes out we can never let our transport know an exact time because they do what they want when they want without letting us know. As well as the corruption in the students is actually scary for example in my second week we already witnessed our first violent fight and instead of doing something everyone just watched, as well as a couple days into our exams of 2020 boys were forbidden to use the bathroom because students set it on fire. They don't understand that girls go through stages once I needed to go to the bathroom to chech up on myself I couldn't do that because it was considered disruptive behavior like wow. Some teachers are pretty good but others don't even teach eg our life orientation teacher is on her phone ALWAYS. Once she even asked us to listen to her music and follow her on Facebook because her music was just that important. I didn't even learn much from that class, our exam was literally written for grade 5 of 6 because the questions were so straight forward you could tell there was no real effort put into this exam. The principle is very picky he always blames the newest students or newwest grade 8 students for the corruption in the school like it's our fault the kids sneak drugs into school to sell it. If you drive past this school you'll see a lot of trees across the sports fields. Before covid under every tree was a group smoking or taking drugs and the teachers would leave them like they telling them its OK to put dangerous substances in your body we don't mind. The teachers are very careless schools closed now and I'm moving on to a new grade but my English teacher hasn't returned my exercise book even before the exam I had to borrow notes fork friends. I still haven't gotten the book back. As well as the fact that they expect students to pay for damages to textbooks but it was given to us in that state and they tell us it's our responsibility but even they were paying for it they should still do it with their part and try and fix the books instead of giving students broken torn up books and we expect to pay like over 200 for that and use it the whole year and then just give it back so don't expect us to keep it in such good condition. They don't even try to fix the books. And to top it all off they're so easily distracted they messed up my report if didn't say anything I would've walked home with someone elses mediocre marks while someone was going home with my really good marks.
Once I heard a rumors that the teachers come on here to see what gets written about the school so they would pretend to be students and write EXCELLENT reviews that aren't even true
Vrybuger for me has and still is a great school. There are sports like netball and soccer but we as a school are huge supporters of rugby. The teachers there are very good at teaching and give help and support us. When it comes to academics we are a good school I guess it's just learners that just do not want to learn. I as a grade 12 and an RCL of Vrybuger think that it really is a great school
