its actually a good school

Im a gr.9 student and i can say with great pride that this a school where any girl can flourish. i firstly want to adress the rumours; there are scarce conservative and old teachers,Bloemhof truly has the best of the best teachers who are as kind as can be. They can openly joke around with you and be there for you, whilst being strict enough that you will still respect them. Secondly Bloemhof is not as hellish as it is out to be; part of every highschool there will be someone who will be mean to you or bully you,but there are psychologists, teachers and koshuismoeders who WILL be there for you. What is true is the perfect bloemhof box;good grades,a-team is only good enough all that, but it makes me driven,i went from e-team to c and my grades went up. I have made so much memories wiith all the susterskap, geea en liefde in die skool.

No support for disabled students

There was a speech at the "Prysuitdeling", where a disabled pupil received multiple awards. The school said the following: "You have taught us many things regarding people with 'physical problems'," "You never skipped classes due to your 'condition'," "You attended every class despite your 'physical problems'," "You never complained or made excuses," and multiple similar statements.

Might I ask you what exactly it is that you learnt from the DISABLED pupil (yes, that's the word, not "physical problems") when the whole building is inaccessible for wheelchair users, and absolutely nothing was done throughout the years this pupil and multiple others was attending the school? There have been many guests in the past who also happened to be in wheelchairs, and despite that, nothing was done to improve the accessibility for disabled people and students. This school will spend thousands to make the exclusive room for personnel/teachers comfortable and luxurious, but can't even think about sparing a little to provide ramps and accessible entrances? Not even the "handicapped toilet" has a path to it that is accessible by wheelchair. So I ask again, what exactly did you learn from this disabled pupil who received these academic rewards? Perhaps, you should have said: "We are proud of you for getting to all your classes despite our lack of accommodation and refusal to make the building a little bit more accessible to you and other pupils or guests who happened to be disabled," but of course, this pupil's achievement is used to make the school look good.

Accommodation for disabled students, especially in this rich school with more than enough money, should be nothing special. Yet, it's nowhere to be found. And if the school can't even have a decent environment free of ableism, then just imagine the amount of other forms of discrimination that is present. One of the school's sayings is "Aanpasbaarheid is die hoogste vorm van intelligensie," ("Adapting is the highest level of intelligence") - it seems this does not apply to the teachers themselves. They expect you to adapt to them and their old ways of thinking, but vice versa it is never done. They will never adapt to the new, younger generation.

This, as of now, you have nothing to brag about regarding your "support" for disabled students, as there is none.

This school is suffocating me

I don't know how long I will be able to stay in this school after writing this review. I know for a fact that I am not happy and I never was.

They show their lack of support for marginalized communities by the fact that there are no wheelchair accessible entrances for disabled people to use, AT ALL. This has been a massive problem for years, despite the fact that there have been wheelchair users who went to this school in the past. All of your school fees will go towards making the building comfortable for the teachers or personnel (I'm talking specifically about the room where students aren't allowed to enter). And what I find extremely ironic is the toilet for wheelchair users, of which all the entrances or paths to it are completely inaccessible by wheelchair. There are no ramps or ways to get near it. So I'm sorry Bloemhof if you wanted to brag or seem caring through the one inaccessible wheelchair toilet in the building, but that's certainly not the way to be inclusive.

If you aren't Christian, straight, cisgender, neurotypical, abled, or simply don't follow or live the typical white Afrikaans Christian ways of living, then you most likely will never be happy in this place. This school really showed me the horrible, cult-like side of Christianity, and it stripped me of my humanity and dreams. And it's not the amount of work that's the problem. It's the toxic environment.

I feel like because of the lack of support I have received throughout my whole high school life, I have missed out on many years that were supposed to be filled with joy. A classmate of mine was recently forced to drop out of this place due to the lack of support there was for them as an autistic person.

If you do not fit any of the descriptions I have mentioned before, you will not be happy in this place.

Will Never go back

This school broke me as a person and personally felt like a 24/7 hellish institution I was forced into for 5 years. It’s run by old, conservative, white entitled (mostly) woman. Could write an essay on this but in short, if you don’t fit in this category I wouldn’t recommend it.

No support for girls with emotional challenges

Not a school that is supportive in any way to girls who have emotional and psychological challenges caused by amongst others COVID and isolation.

Great for white, conservative Christians!

I completed my highschool edication here, from grade 8-12. This school is PERFECT for white, afrikaans, conservative Christian ladies. It helps to be either very smart, very good at sports or very good at debate. If you are not excellent or fit into any of these groups, welcome to hell. This school will be hell for you for 5 years if you do not conform to these specifications. This school sees any mental health issues as problematic and they just kick you out.
If you do not excel, you are useless. Think twice before you let the amazing academics and sports programs fool you.

honest review

i can write a book about how toxic, insecure breeding and awful bloemhof is. this school takes away who you are, completely. the teachers are awful, they are all old and conservative with no sense modern thinking. every morning i went to school it felt like i was going to prison, no joke. i used to cry about going to school at night. there is no room for being yourself, no room for giving your opinion, no room to go through a rough time, and most of all, no room to grow. since grade 8 the school pushed me into a bloemhof perfect afrikaans girl box. it got to a point that people looking to send their girls to bloemhof would ask me about the school and what i love about it or whats good about it that i couldn’t name a single thing. not the vibe, not the sport, not the kids, not the teachers, not the building, not breaktime, not art periods, not 4m, not the tuckshop, not off periods, not a favorite teacher because there were none. i hated this school. it wrecked me from happiness for years until i could no longer take it and i left. if you’re considering going to bloemhof, do yourself a favor and don’t <3

Bloemhof didn't care about me

The school is very intelligent, but I feel like it never looked out for me. Some teachers are extremely rude and care about nothing except academics and sport. Overall not a fun time.

Bloemhof really is not that great.

I've been in Bloemhof since 2018. I genuinely don't think it's a bad school, but I also don't think the school is great.

I like the education and a lot of the teachers are great at their jobs. But there are a lot who aren't great at teaching and Bloemhof does nothing about it even after all of the complaints. Some of the teachers are also mean and like to pick on you. However there are teachers who are nice and I like them.

When it comes to the more social life side of the school, there barely is any representation or acceptance. Especially if you are LGBTQ, then I won't recommend you go to this school. It's crawling with homophobic students, parents, and even some teachers. Homophobia is unacceptable especially in schools.

If you are concerned about your mental health and being accepted in a school, go to Rhenish. The school itself will support you no matter your sexual orientation or religion.

Best school (in my opinion)

I'm in Bloemhof, and everyone is amazing. The students are so involved and everyone has this bond. It's awesome. The teachers are really great, too and care for the studsnts a lot. Wouldn't want to be in any other school.

HMS Bloemhof

Bloemhof Girls High is the place to be . The school that has the best traditions and where you make lifelong friendships ,that is stronger than anything. The school strive to help her scholars to reach their full potential in whatever they do. Although the school is based on Christianity any other girl of any religion is welcome to practice her own. The school and her teachers help the students with anything they can . Bloemhof is a place where you can be yourself and flourish. The school has an 100% pass rate for several years in a row. Girls flourish in art , culture and in sport whether it's swimming or athletics , hockey or netball.

Not too shabby

Bloemhof presents amazing opportunities but unless you are going to make use of some of these specialisation fields (specific subject choices that you can't have anywhere else, drama or sport) it is pointless going there. At the end of the day, how hard you work is more important than the specific school at which you graduate.

As with every school, there are some phenomenal teachers and some who are not as great. There is a general sense of care for the well being of the students, not only their academic achievements.

Classes were organised and focused, students were mostly respectful and classes were rarely interrupted by bad behaviour.

Many students of colour experienced some sense of discrimination or prejudice from caucasion students. Because students of colour were in the minority, it was said that they often felt judged, discriminated against or left out.
