Benoni high has the most unprofessional staff and system including negligence towards students right to education in order to keep the title of the best school .
Most of the academic leaders I’ve come across have stated they had to do a lot of extensive learning as the school dosen’t provide educators .The history ,physical science and English department have failed to provide the necessary tools to succeed due to the unprofessionalism.as from 2019 the school has been decreasing in quality.uniform is good ,facilities ,other than the bathroom, are good however Benoni high has made taking an extra subject a punishing experience for my kids as they don’t cater the needs and tools of academic learners the way they do for rugby and other sports . I have been condescended and disrespected multiple times by people of power when addressing academic concerns I can’t imagine what the learns go through. Taking goes value away of a good school
10 years later. I'm still looking for the statistics that state, Benoni High is in the top 100 goverment schools in the world.
Absolutely criminal the things teachers used to peddle to parents.
Knowing what we know now working in the real world (the one we wouldn't make) plus the way things have changed. Teachers should of been charged, sued, or arrested.
My favourite school activity
When someone failed matric they got expelled so it didn't mess up the
"100% pass rate"
My favourite teacher was...
Mrs Von G (taught us about constitutional rights while simultaneously taking our human rights away)
My favourite moment...
When nudes of teachers got leaked they actually had the audacity to check all our phones and TRY to confiscate them imagine nearly 3 grades over 30 classes with over 30 students in each got blamed for poor life choices of a teacher. Also ridiculed for being entertained by such "smut"
My favourite past time.
Watching teachers call children and young women sluts for not plating their hair. Meanwhile they're sat there with red dyed Karen cuts or walked in smelling like wet dog and poor life choices.
(Imagine being called a slut for having a pony tail)
Majority of my class mates and the grade above got expelled for pretty mischievous basic behaviour (being a kid) but yet went from 40% per subject (if lucky) to 60%-70% when going to another goverment, private or home school.
I got invited to the 10 year reunion this year (2024) (bless the people who organised it)
But I refuse to fake a smile and spend my money travelling back to SA to sit in a school which did nothing but break me and others down mentally and physically.
Even the teachers pets would come to rugby games the year after they matriculated. They got chased off the premises
Now I sit here, living in UK running my own business and travelling the world.
The matrics of this year are really going through it. My son complains about his accounting and economics teachers constantly. He states that they don't know what is going on and have to put the answers on the board. He told me that his accounting teacher is constantly eating and never teaching. He is sometimes late for class coming from the tuckshop. The Parents of this year have emailed about this and how horrible the teachers are and how they aren't teaching and the school said our kids would have to fail the subject for them to do anything. This is ridiculous as my son is reliant on his marks to be good in order to have a good future. They aren't doing anything about the fact that our kids averages have dropped by more than 20%. The school prioritises discipline over education and constantly threatens our kids for staying home and wanting to get some work done as they don't get much done at school. My son says that the matrics have the worst teachers ever this year and that he isn't cannot determine how his marks are going to be by the end of the year with his teachers. He studies day and night and they wright everyday aswell. If your looking for a school to send your kid to where effective teaching will be prioritised I suggest not looking into benoni high.
This is honestly so sad like what in the bad education is going on. Teachers don’t come to class, when they there they don’t teach, our marks are not looking good at all. You know that one sign that says ‘Why Am I Here?’ Ya neh why am I there for real. Don’t go there yoh
"As a Grade 8 student, I must admit that my experience at this school has been quite disappointing. It seems like they admit students without considering their academic performance, and there's a lack of background checks on incoming students. In my class alone, we have three fifteen-year-olds and one sixteen-year-old in Grade 8! What's even more concerning is that three students openly engage in vaping, smoking, and alcohol consumption, despite these activities being reported to teachers. Shockingly, they received only warnings, and no meaningful action was taken to address their behavior.
The waiting list to join this school is incredibly long, but from my experience, I would urge potential students and parents to think twice. While a few teachers treat students with respect, unfortunately, many others seem to vent their unresolved frustrations on us. In one instance, a math teacher was let go due to inappropriate behavior towards female students, creating an unsafe environment.
Thankfully, the school has improved security with the introduction of turnstiles, but there's still a long way to go in creating a positive and safe learning environment here."
I would like to know what the best way would be, to report a teacher, without your child being victimized, ill-treated, intimidated & discriminated against. Someone that I can actually speak to in confidence (if such a thing exists). I find that a specific Teacher isn't doing what he/she supposed to be doing & as a result my child & the rest of the class is bearing the brunt of his/her unhappiness being a Teacher. I'm struggling with this for a while and I need to approach this with caution for my childs sake. Please if somebody, anybody, can assist.
The teachers at that school are arrogant and Demanding and cannot control themselves... Why should they even be teachers if they cannot hold the pressure of stress? Absolute disgrace from Benoni High school. Left my Child in tears and Feeling depressed walking into class.
I have been at BHS for years and my experience there keeps getting poorer and poorer. I honestly don't know where to start but with the poor teaching skills of teachers, especially grade 9 and 10 math, constantly confusing the work, making it a self-teach topic or rushing the work like it won't affect futures. The discipline is also poor you get punished by your standing in the school. I had an incident with a boy who said racist slurs to me, and they had just turned a blind eye without resolving the problem. Bullying is a really big problem amongst students and teachers, breathing in the wrong direction gets you into beef with 10 teachers. A very sport involved school, not taking interest in cultural activities. Choosing subjects are very limited, for example you cannot take math core with art, it's like voodoo. The higher staff are very rude towards students resulting in the same attitude to be reflected back. Favoritism is another problem I haven't experienced it firsthand, but I've heard about it.
I know high school isn't supposed to be as easy as primary school, but what Benoni high makes up go through physically impacts us very badly on a mental level. They dumb a ton of work on us to be done in a very short time span, with zero guidance. I have a few classes where teachers don't show up and now, I'm writing an exam without knowing what I have done this year because my teacher has only been to class a handful of times. Teachers are also racist towards students and students to teachers. Teachers throwing books off balconies and pushing and abusing children. There is very bad communication between the school and its learners, they talk about time management when they can't stick to times. The office lady is so rude for no reason. They also care more about appearance than actual school.
This is my experience over the last 5 years from gr 8 to gr12.
- parents are largely marginalised by the management. They are not given a slot on the agenda wen parent meetings are held, no opportunity for inputs or questions of clarity, meetings are closed after the last staff member speaks.
-Communication with the school is devalued, such a wealthy, experienced school but reception cannot take messages for teachers, only emails to teachers. In all my efforts over the yrs my calls were never returned prompty, always after the third time. Parents are left frustrated. The Maths department are the worste in attending to requests. My request to update my email n cell no was never done until my child finished matric despite several efforts.
- There are pockets of excelence amongst educators. By and large the quality of teaching at classrolm level is not monitored by middle management, teachers manage their subjects like university, lecture n learn if you want!
- Learner progress is not monitired n no strategies are in place to improve learners progress. Learner achievement in math n the Sciences is due to external private tuition. The volume of work, corrections n remedial measures in the maths n sciences department is pathetic, not punctual n often done without learners having seen their marked tests.
- It is noticeable that the top management of the school is fragmented, team work amongst managers is lacking n a power struggle is visible. Managers n educators have clicks n some educators loafing during teaching time is condoned by manager friends.
- Without an apointment you will not be attended to if you visit the school, despite the urgency. I sat for an hour n had to leave, unattended. Parents are not seen as clients to be accounted to. The partnership between parent, school n learner is not upheld by this school. The management are defensive wen problems are raised, problems persist for years bcs they are not followed up n resolved by management.
- Staff turnover in the maths n afrikasns department is unusually high, resulting in poor learner performance.
Benoni High School is only great at publicly putting up the front that they are a school that puts their students first. Sports is continuously put before academics. Opportunities are given to those favoured by the schools executives. The rules are conditional, repercussions are never faced by the heads of sports teams or those with great relationships with teachers. A lot of the rules in terms of hair and dress code are anti-black. I would not send my child to the school if mental health, academic excellence and fairness are traits you are looking for in a school
benoni high has no respect for their learners . all that matters is rugby and how they look to the public .
they care more about how your hair looks than the childrens mental health
most of the teachers don’t even like teaching so in my opinion why make the students lives hell because you doing like your jobs instead of getting a new one
for example in my experience i had a bad experience with a boy and brought it up to the school but because he was a athlete the turned a blind eye
I've had the worst experience in benoni high, the teachers favourtise students and all they truly care about is sports. They do not think about the mental health of the students and push us to the limit until we are emotionally and physically drained. There are some good things about bhs but my experience has mostly been bad..students do not get the same punishments for the same wrong doings they are punished by the name they hold at benoni high. I find it an unfair school
Benoni High is so competetive and prioritizes Rugby over any sport at all. There are only a few teachets that I can actually say good things about. Some teachers just can teach in a way that we can understand whats being taught on a daily basis and we always loose out on information even when attended extra lessons.Becoming an RCL takes a lot of popularity which some students see as an unnessesary way to become one, unmessesary attention
As a current benoni high school student I would say that it is okay it's not too shabby , not too perfect either. For a government school they have quite outdone themselves but that there isroom for improvement like any other school they prioritize rugby over any other sport their colour award system is atrocious!!! Kids have to on many occasions get their coaches to fight for them to get their black blazers( half or full colours).Their RCL process is based on popularity not with teachers but with kids so if your child is not popular or you are not part of the SGB your child will never become RCL! on the positive side if your child is dedicated and focused Benoni high school has all the tools for them . There are opportunities for them to go overseas. The teachers are good I don't see any racism just favouritism students love to confuse the two!!
Honestly, benoni High isn't that bad, but I do have some issues. From primary school to this high school I was expecting a steady go at things, but at benoni high, often teachers don't teach well, or at all, some math teachers constantly make mistakes and confuse the living daylights out of their students, this makes it hard. I know some things are self study but it shouldn't be all, and the students there aren't really accepting, and every tenth teacher has a bone to pick with you, and don't get me started on the office lady. She is so rude, and even my other fellow students noted that, she is very unhelpful and is really rude to talk with. Tuck is also extremely expensive.
The school is terrible. There are only a handful of teachers of colour, all but five white teachers act racist, the school only prioritises rugby, athletics, cross country and cricket. The deputy principal breaks down your confidence every time you have it and the school makes decisions that are not in the best interests of the learners. The only good thing there is the food, the five non-racist white teachers and the teachers of colour. I am however thankful for the ground staff, the tuckshop ladies and the people at the café. They have earned the respect of the majority of learners and a minority of teachers. This respect is definitely well deserved. The school only looks good if you are not attending the school. I would never recommend the school to anyone
I don't recommend BHS. The only good thing there is the food and a handful of teachers and students. I can honestly say that there are three non-racist white people at the school. There was another one but the school let her go last year. She and my Grade 8 teacher were there reason why I settled into the school. The deputy principal is rude, mean and racist. The principal lacks communication skills. The school culture altogether is rubbish. The school looks very good if you are not attending the school. I am also thankful for the ground staff, tuckshop ladies and employees at the café who have earned the respect of the majority of learners and a minority of teachers. I would never recommend the school
Never consider going to BHS. The only good thing there is the food and a handful of teachers. The deputy principal is, in my personal opinion, a jerk. He calls learners stupid just for failing to correctly answer his questions in class. I find that rude, mean, confidence killing abd derogatory. The school threatens to kick you out if you refuse to participate in sport. The school only prioritises rugby, athletics, netball and hockey, not other sports. This is the reason why the school's sport culture is very overrated. I feel like the school is hindering transformation as there is only one teacher of mixed race ,a small amount of Indian teachers and two Black African teachers. The school only looks good if you are not attending the school. It still suprises me as to why over a thousand children apply to go there every year.
Very unfair in their ways , don’t care about students mental health only the reputation of the school , teachers couldn’t care less about their students
Lovely school , I really enjoyed my 5 years being there. The only change I'll make is probably making things more fair , such us the voting of Prefects , captains , picking of sport matches as I feel that not everyone is being treated equal , unless you call spoon feeding the "remarkable" ones the cake when infact you should share so that everyone can make it out on top , I say this as it took me 4 years to get my colours when I placed first in every competition I participated in , and the excuse I got was , " I wasn't a team player" ...
The discipline in the school is outstanding! They teach the kids wrong from right and try their best to make the children into successful leaders; not followers; the school aims to teach your children to persevere and to keep your head high. Academics comes first; like it should; and there is a huge spectrum of sports to choose from !
As a previous pupil at Benoni High I knew that the best place for my son to learn discipline, respect and academics was in Benoni High. The school has amazing teachers and has been rated as one of the top schools in South Africa. Their sports programs and coaches do an awesome job training the kids. My son is in Matric this year and has become a respectable human being. Thank you BHS for bringing out the best in our kids through discipline and hard work.
